Description

Celebrate Juneteenth with Carlyle House Historic Park and the Athenaeum!

Join us as we mark the day the Emancipation Proclamation reached the last people held in slavery within the former Confederate States, two years after it had taken effect.

This FREE community event of live music, hands-on activities, art, history, poetry readings, and poetry clinic will be held on the lawn and gardens of Carlyle House, a historic site located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria.

Visitors will have the opportunity to talk with the artists after and in-between performances as well as share their written and/or drawn reactions to the powerful performances.

The Athenaeum is offering an African-themed hands-on activity for all ages. Displays, including information about research to date on the enslaved individuals owned by John Carlyle and his descendants, and a scavenger hunt give visitors the chance to learn more about our country’s second independence day.

Staff from the Slavery Inventory Database group will be on-site to talk more about their work with Carlyle House and their efforts to establish the identities of individuals who have been neglected by history.

Special guests include:

Benjamin Gates
Jamal Rashad
Mysfit
Simply Sherri
Michael Spears
Takisha Bauermeister, JITB Boutique
